HOMOWO FESTIVAL

The Homowo festival popularly known in the Greater Accra region is celebrated by the Gas between August to September. Traditionally, the name was as a result of famine that took place on the Ga land which was a season of despair but eventually, the rains came back and everything was restored making them rich with food, hence the name Homowo which means “to hoot at hunger”. During the Homowo celebration, ‘kpokpoi’ a special dish is prepared and sprinkled by the Ga traditional chiefs. This meal is made from cornmeal and is eaten with palmnut soup. There is also pouring of libation and traditional dances. This festival is celebrated by all towns in the Ga state which are; Nungua, La, Teshie, Lante Dzan We, Tema, Ga mashie, Osu and Kpone.
