TORTSOGBEZA FESTIVAL

The Tortsogbeza also known as ‘River Crossing Festival’ is celebrated by the people of Sokpoe in the South Tongo district, Volta region. It is usually celebrated during Easter, specifically, the second week in April. The celebration begins with series of socio-cultural activities and its significance is to remember the historic crossing of the Volta Lake by their ancestors before settling on the Sokpoe land. During the celebration, there is the re-enactment of the river crossing from Sogakope to Sokpoe and this marks the celebration of the River crossing festival.
